Richmond Police Department’s Citizens Academy

Applications are now being accepted for the 22nd Citizens Police Academy, September 20 – October 13 (Tuesday & Thursday Evenings), 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

This FREE Citizens Police Academy is designed to introduce citizens to the RPD, improve relationships with RPD, help participants gain knowledge of police operations, develop stronger advocates and promote safety in the community. Sessions will include, but not be limited to: Hands-Only CPR Training, RPD patrol functions, hands-on exercises, tours and so much more.

You must be 18 years of age and live or work in the City of Richmond. There are seats available for surrounding jurisdictions. The Academy is perfect for persons interested in a career in law enforcement. All applicants must pass a background check and investigation. No felony convictions. Misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed. Applicants will be notified when they are selected to participate. Those selected to attend are expected to attend and participate in at least 80% of the sessions.

Graduates of the Citizens Police Academy officially become Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS). Members of VIPS are notified of volunteer opportunities, events, special programs and services with RPD. Graduates may be also called to participate on special boards and planning committees.
