Wawa near the Diamond
A brand new Wawa location is set to open on 3100 N. Boulevard, on the razed site that once housed Bill’s Barbecue. The Wawa is planned to be open before the end of the year and will be similar to the location on Staples Mill Road. The Wawa deal comes as the debate surrounding the future of North Boulevard and The Diamond ramps up. How Many People Have Been Shot in Your Neighborhood This Year?

Thanks to a nonprofit, nonpartisan project known as the Gun Violence Archive, data on gun homicides and nonfatal shootings is now available well before the federal government releases its statistics. Those data include location information that makes it possible to plot those shootings on a map showing how many have taken place in your vicinity.

CHRISTMAS TREE SAFETY TIPS FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Richmond Fire department tweeted this link on winter safety tips when it comes to picking a Christmas tree and lighting your house this year. When picking the tree, choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious. Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2″ from the base of the trunk and water it daily. Make sure the tree is not blocking exits and is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. When lighting the tree, use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect. Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. For more tips, view the article yourself right here.

Working Hard to Clean Up Randolph Streets

RVA Clean Sweep has been conducting monthly trash cleanups in Randolph since September 2014. This year volunteers removed over a ton of litter (2,000 pounds) off the streets of our neighborhood. Volunteers have stated they are starting to see the difference in certain sections of Randolph. RVA Clean Sweep has also been working with GRTC to install additional trash cans along Allen and Idlewood to help lessen the amount of street litter along these roads.

Out of the 184 volunteers hours put into our neighborhood to fight litter, Randolph neighbors provided around 16% of the support. We encourage residents of Randolph to volunteer 60-90 minutes once a year to a neighborhood cleanup. If you are unable to physically attend a cleanup, promoting the cleanups on your social media pages OR talking to your neighbors about the cleanups would be of great help. If you have school aged children that need community service volunteer hours, these cleanups count!

Volunteers covered from Powhatan to Grayland and from Meadow to Allen/Sumpter.

Our goal for 2016 is to see more neighbors faces at these monthly cleanups! We already have two cleanups schedule in January 2016.
