Pothole-palooza to repair roads damaged during the Snow Storm

The City’s Department of Public Works will resume vacuum leaf collection service on Monday, Feb. 8, weather permitting. The program was temporarily suspended during Winter Storm Jonas. Since the end of the storm, DPW staff has been working to convert its dual-purpose equipment from its snow removal function back to leaf collection.

In addition, the City has launched Pothole-palooza to repair roads damaged during the storm. Residents are encouraged to join in Pothole-palooza by reporting potholes to the city by calling 3-1-1 or onwww.Richmondgov.com and clicking the MPACT button.

Since Monday, DPW crews have filled approximately 300 potholes. Potholes are repaired year around, but DPW steps up its efforts in the winter and spring due to the impact harsh weather conditions have on City streets.

RPD Introduces Body Cameras

City Police Introduce Body Cameras

Embedded image permalinkPolice Chief Alfred Durham rolled out the department’s new body cameras Tuesday. Chief Durham hosted a pilot test, trained officers on how to use the cameras, and conducted a live demonstration of the gear. Richmond police will be introducing both types of the Taser cameras, which the company says has proven to help both officers on duty and the people who need their help. Studies show that once body cameras are implemented, use of force incidents drop up to 60 percent. Citizen complaints of use of force also plummet – nearly 90 percent. Several Virginia departments are already using the cameras. For more information: visit this ABC 8 article.

History Talk: Tredegar Iron Works

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, February 3, 2016

The Oregon Hill Home Improvement Council, (OHHIC) a neighborhood membership organization whose mission includes historical preservation, is presenting an author’s talk about historic Tredegar Iron Works on Wednesday, February 24th at 6:30 pm. Local historian Nathan Vernon Madison, a graduate of the University of Mary Washington (BA) and Virginia Commonwealth University (MA), will present and discuss his recently released book, Tredegar Iron Works. His account utilizes a wealth of primary sources and firsthand accounts to chronicle the full history of the Richmond industrial icon. The Oregon Hill neighborhood was built and occupied by many of the foundry’s workers and therefore has a special connection to this history. This author’s talk is co-hosted by St. Andrew’s Church and will take place in their chapel at 236 S. Laurel Street. After the presentation Mr. Madison will be available to sign books. A small reception will follow the talk next door at the St. Andrew’s Parish House. This event is free and open to the public, however seating is limited and RSVP’s are appreciated.

Local Puppies to Compete in Puppy Bowl XII

The Puppy Bowl airs on Animal Planet each year during Super Bowl Sunday, and this year, two local dogs are going for the championship! Atticus lives in Ashland and Hank the Tank in Short Pump.  These two rescue dogs from Sanctuary Rescue went from tiny little newborn nuggets to pro athletes.  Sanctuary Rescue is a foster-based dog rescue headquartered in Midlothian, Virginia, specializing in saving pregnant and nursing mama dogs and orphaned puppies from shelters.
