WHAT’S WITH THE BLUE RECYCLE BINS?

The City’s contractor for recycling has moved to a new, larger recycling bin. These blue – topped bins have recently been distributed throughout the Randolph.

Items of note:

  • Bins should be put in the alley, not in front of the residence, in order to be emptied. The trucks now come through the alleys
  • At this time, there is only one size of recycling can.
  • The smaller green bins can be recycled at the October 17th Recycling Event

Saturday, September 5th @rvacleansweep Neighborhood Cleanup

Lovely stroll around the neighborhood tonight. Lots of neighbors out and about enjoying the cooler evening.

We chatted with folks about the upcoming cleanup while walking Buddy and picking up trash along Allen and Lombardy. We are going to focus heavily on Idlewood, Grayland, the overpasses and the park on Saturday, September 5th. They all need a little loving right now.

Randolph September 5th CleanUp

Please join us for this neighborhood cleanup! We will meet on the corner of Idlewood and Allen at 10am.

Recycling in the Alley Tomorrow! @CVWMA2

This Wednesday is a red Wednesday, which means trash and recycling pickup.

This will be the first time for the entire Randolph neighborhood to use the new, larger rolling recycling containers. Ideally, they are stored and deployed in the back alleys along with trash cans. If you have elderly neighbors or any vacant RRHA homes, please help out by moving their new recycling bins to the alleys.

Remember to sign up for Recycling Perks! You can earn discounts and coupons for recycling.

Great news for John B. Cary! 2014-2015 SOL results show positive gains.

From Thad Williamson, Director of the Mayor’s office for Community Wealth Building, on the JBC PTA Facebook group:

“. . . John B. Cary showed improvements in every area compared to 2013-14:

  • Reading pass rate increased from 63% to 72%;
  • History and Social Sciences from 73% to 92%;
  • Math from 84 to 93%;
  • Science from 71% to 74%.

As a comparison at Fox,

  • reading pass score was 85%;
  • History and Social Sciences 89%;
  • Math 82%;
  • Science 90%.

The scores for African-American students at Cary are across the board higher than those of African-American students at Fox (and much higher in math in particular). . . . . overall it looks like Cary did really well on the tests.”
